Brew Monday

Some say that the third Monday of January is “the most difficult day of the year”. It’s dark outside, it’s (probably) raining, and Christmas has come and gone as quickly as ever. But Samaritans say that the idea of ‘blue Monday’ is a myth, and that our mood shouldn’t be determined according to the calendar’s whim. Because it doesn’t matter what time of year it is. Because everyone has good days and bad days, regardless of what the weather’s like.

Brew Monday 3

So what is Brew Monday? On 17 January, Samaritans are asking everyone to grab a ’cuppa and catch up with the people we care about. It’s a campaign that encourages us to talk about how we’re feeling over a brew. Or a glass of milk, orange juice, water… whatever you like.

Starting that conversation can be tricky. Being a good listener can be even harder. If you want to learn how best to conduct a conversation about breaking the blues with a brew, consider reading Samaritans’ advice:

Brew Monday kicks off on the 17th January, but it’s designed to kickstart conversations all year round. If we can normalise discussions about mental health, when we most need it, then perhaps the concept of blue Monday will fade into myth and memory.
